He is an unfortunate man, impoverished and unable to climb the social ladder which his wife resents him for, calling him weak and cowardly.
Myrtle Wilson, although she makes few actual appearances in The Great Gatsby, is a pivotal character. She is the wife of George Wilson, who owns a car repair shop and sells cars, and she is the mistress of Tom Buchanan.
Wilson is portrayed as a weak man, he loves his wife and is tormented by knowing she is unfaithful. George develops as a tragic figure in his grief over losing Myrtle, rocking himself back and forth and muttering incoherently. He is intent on avenging Myrtle's death and finding the driver of the yellow car.

The Buchanans and Jay Gatsby belong to the class privileged through property and education, Nick Carraway could be considered to be a member of the propertyless intelligentsia and the Wilsons are members of the working class.
As Gatsby's car approaches the garage, Myrtle, who has been arguing with her husband, sees the vehicle and mistakenly believes that Tom Buchanan is driving it. She runs into the road, intending to speak with him but she is hit and killed.
George Wilson, meanwhile, mistakenly thinks that Myrtle was having an affair with Gatsby. He also believes Gatsby was driving the car that killed her. Wilson thus murders the wrong man, shooting Gatsby instead of Tom (his wife's lover) or Daisy (his wife's killer).
How did Wilson got Gatsby's name?
Wilson Gets Gatsby's name from Tom. In Chapter nine, Nick meets up with Tom. Tom says that he told Wilson that the car belonged to Gatsby. Tom claims that if he had not, Wilson would have killed him on the spot.

George loves and idealizes Myrtle, and is devastated by her affair with Tom. George is consumed with grief when Myrtle is killed. George is comparable to Gatsby in that both are dreamers and both are ruined by their unrequited love for women who love Tom.
Wilson would seek him out and he would kill him, and yet he proceeds with his deception. This aspect makes him directly and morally accountable for Gatsby's death (Hou, 2022). Despite Tom's lie, it is evident that the individual responsible for Myrtle's death is Daisy Buchanan.
Tom and Myrtle have a passionate love affair. But as they are both married to other people, the timing is wrong to the conventions of marriage. And even if they were both single, their relationship would likely not last long in a society that would judge Myrtle poorly because she is not from a wealthy family like Tom.
Myrtle, twelve years into a marriage she's unhappy in, sees her affair with Tom as a romantic escape. She tells the story of how she and Tom met like it's the beginning of a love story.
In The Great Gatsby, George Wilson locks Myrtle in the bedroom because he ''had discovered that Myrtle had some sort of life apart from him in another world'' and intends to take her away. George tells Tom that he has ''got wised up to something funny the last two days.
Did Daisy hit Myrtle on purpose?

Myrtle was having an affair with Tom and during that affair Tom symbolized many different things to her. Tom symbolized the “American Dream” which included money, wealth, and freedom which she did not have in her marriage with Wilson.
Later on, in Chapter 7, George starts to suspect she's having an affair when he finds her dog's leash in a drawer at the house.
Tom hits Myrtle because she refused to obey him, but also in defense of Daisy; he feels strongly about both women. Tom's outburst therefore shows that he has difficulty handling complex emotions. He responds with violence to maintain control.
George tells Tom that he needs money because he wants to move west with his wife. By then he's begun to suspect his wife's affair. George has actually locked Myrtle upstairs and plans to keep her there until they have the money to move (7.311).
